Q What is vStorm Enterprise? The vStorm Enterprise software provides near real-time access to mainframe data for processing and analytics. This avoids the cost and delay of traditional ETL and staging processes. It allows mainframe data to be accessed by your analytics platform of choice. Q What kind of data can be accessed? Machine logs, app logs, DB2 tables, VSAM, IMS, and sequential files (tape). Mainframe servers process 60% of all global enterprise transactions and are often the repository for the most important enterprise data. This enterprise data can now be integrated into your application performance platform, business intelligence products and data analytics applications. Q Does vStorm Enterprise require staging? No. Staging doubles storage requirements, and adds latency to the process. Data is copied directly into HDFS and transformation operations (EBCDIC conversion, BCD transformation, COBOL Copybook mapping and more) are performed in-flight. Enterprise data can be copied directly into Hive, if you want to process it using SQL. Q Where does your software run and do you use MIPS? The vStorm Enterprise software runs on Integrated Facilities for Linux (IFLs), which are the dedicated processors on IBM mainframe servers which run Linux. Applications running on Linux are preferred because they are not subject to MIPS charges and do not consume CPU resources that might be used for real-time processing. Q What targets can I output my data into for analysis and processing? Data can be output to file systems on or off of the System z mainframe server: Linux and Windows, HDFS and Hive. Q What is zDoop? The zDoop software provides a secure Hadoop platform for processing on IBM System z mainframes. We validated zDoop through IBM’s Chiphopper program and we provide full commercial support. The vStorm Enterprise software makes System z data available to zDoop and other destinations, both on and off of System z. Q Where does zDoop's HDFS reside? It runs on Linux on the IFL, and everything is stored in System z storage and can be managed through standard System z applications or Hadoop’s ecosystem. Q What are the advantages of direct import into Hive? By supporting Hive, vStorm Enterprise enables SQL processing of the data. Common operations like joining tables and selecting detailed or grouped results can be performed in the high-performance Hadoop environment without incurring MIPS charges. You can take immediate advantage of the data using familiar SQL commands. Q What is the 2-2-2 benchmark? Under this benchmark, vStorm Enterprise copied 2 billion transactions and processed them within 2 hours using only 2 IFLs. This is approximately 10 times faster than typical ETL process to move, extract and process data. Q How does it compare with IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator (IDAA)? IDAA is an accelerator (based on Netezza technology) for accelerating DB2 queries through SQL. The vStorm Enterprise software provides direct access to DB2 and other z/OS data for processing through Hadoop and other applications. Q How does it compare to IBM Infosphere BigInsights? Big Insights is a Big Data platform for x86 64-bit Linux systems. The vStorm Enterprise software accesses mainframe data sources for integration into Big Insights Hadoop or other applications. Q Can vStorm Enterprise integrate my z/OS data with Websphere and Cognos? Yes. Data can be made directly available to these applications or loaded into Hadoop with other sources as part of an integration with these applications.
